Daily Self-Portraits: Week 6

Plan for this week: Further exploration in context, different viewpoints, working in oil

Learnings:

  • Luminosity: using japanese paper with oil, absorbing oil (learning from part 1) and translucent to backlight
  • Working in oil takes really more time – challenging for one painting a day. The last paintings were actually done in two days.
  • Focusing on one focus area can make the overall painting much more interesting
  • I continue to like to work with brushes alongside knifes and spatula.
  • Placing first the right color blot and than moving on from there (merging, blending, scraping) seems to me an effective and appealing approach.
  • I am continuing to understand value and hues impact on overall expression and image appeal.

Plan for next week:

  • revision and reflection

37: Oil on sized japan paper (32 x 41 cm – made of two single sheets):

Stefan513593 - daily self-portrait #37: Oil on japanese paper (32 x 41cm)

Stefan513593 – daily self-portrait #37: Oil on japanese paper (32 x 41cm)

Stefan513593 - daily self-portrait #37: Oil on japanese paper (32 x 41cm) - backlight

Stefan513593 – daily self-portrait #37: Oil on japanese paper (32 x 41cm) – backlight

=> the thin japanese paper absorbs readily the oil and turp from the oil paint. Keeping it rather simple in tonal values to enforce luminosity. I am fascinated by the effect when holding the painting against light. The backlight enforces the luminosity and pushes tonal contrasts further through the semi-translucent properties of japanese paper. I need to think how I can use this for my future work.

36: Oil on acrylic primed paper (48 x 36 cm):

inspired by Walter Sickert

Stefan513593 - daily self-portrait #36: Oil and acrylic on paper (48x36cm)

Stefan513593 – daily self-portrait #36: Oil and acrylic on paper (48x36cm)

=> A two step painting: first a two value tonal painting in acrylic with a following oil tonal painting.
